Cultural museum documenting the history of clothing, cuisine and lifestyle in Daisen. Housed in the repurposed Mineyoshikawa Elementary School that closed in 2008, are over 4,000 items including immersive scenes of village streets and recreations of traditional rural life. Designated by the city as a Cultural Property, among the displays are flatboat ferries used to cross the river in Hirukawa, and a music room housing a collection of old songs. The third floor offers a sweeping view of passing Komachi bullet trains.

Based on the North Noh Stage at Kyoto’s Nishi Hongan-ji, Mahoroba is Akita’s only authentic noh theatre. The background depicting two young pines, and the two dramatic pillars standing in the foreground leave a powerful impression during the outdoor noh performances, with a stage suitably grand for this traditional style of performing art. Noh plays are held once a year in autumn.

This official JAF circuit located at the old Arakawa Mine is among the best in Tohoku. Bookings for racing cart and mini bike time trials are available and visitors may also just come and watch the action. Children and beginners welcome.

Wanpaku no Mori’s camping facilities and unique treehouse cottages are surrounded by untouched nature. Stoves are available for use in the cooking area and under the cottages are tables and chairs for enjoying picnics and BBQs in the shade of the trees. Popular with children is the 100m grass sledging slope.

The first roadside rest area built along Route 13. On both sides of the approaching road are raised mounds, an uncommon feature today that dates back to the Edo period, once used to mark the distance from the capital for travellers. It’s said to be the 133rd marker from the capital. Inside is a lineup of local products using the original Ajidoraku sauce, various regional souvenirs, Akita Komachi rice grown in Kamioka and a restaurant serving fresh local produce.

Water originating from snow melting off the Dewa Hills is used to give the sake a rich aroma, umami and pleasant sharpness. Dewatsuru’s has a rice field to bottle approach, centred around a rice cultivation association formed by the brewers and local farmers, ensuring the sustained production of high-quality base ingredients.

Also known as the New Concept Fireworks Competition, the Winter Chapter provides a unique opportunity for young pyrotechnicians from all over Japan to display their newest and most creative work. A judged section allows each competitor only ten #4 and five #5 shells to create a dynamic display. Total shell count of around 1,000.
